For me this Christmas is all about bringing the magic of the season alive for Luisa. It’s only December 1st and we’ve already seen her little face light up with such joy as we unwrap another little piece of festive cheer. She’s starting to get an sense of the routine and traditions and especially loves to tell anyone who’ll listen that Santa Claus is coming to her house – not yet, soon.
One of the lovely things about having a child to share Christmas with is that you get to relive so much of your own childhood and see it all through fresh eyes. This week we introduced Luisa to an old friend of mine The Snowman and he brought along his four legged friend, someone I wasn’t acquainted with, The Snowdog.
Luisa, like myself, is a book worm so she has loved reading these classic stories with us. Even my Mum was roped into story time when she dropped us back home after art class, although seeing as it was her who kicked off the love of reading in our family I don’t think she minded at all. Luisa especially loves The Snowdog board book because she can read it independently without me wincing at the thought of her tearing a page!
I absolutely love the fact that you can get a personalised copy of The Snowman and The Snowdog, I think it makes an already beautiful story even more precious and something your family can cherish for years to come. Thorntons also have a range of personalised Snowman advent calendars which are gorgeous, I know Luisa can’t wait to east her first window later today.
Christmas is such a wonderful time for the whole family to spend time together but it can be quite hectic, this year we’re being careful to remember it’s important to slow down and enjoy the tiny moments. It can be tempting to schedule lots of exciting days out but some of the most precious memories are made on your sofa, cuddled up with a book and a little treat like hot chocolate.
The lovely folks at Penguin, who sent us these goodies to help kick start our advent fun, also sent a few grown up treats for me to enjoy. I absolutely love the Snowdog tree decoration, ours has sparkly red accents but there are lots of special designs to choose from. Luisa was really keen to hang this little guy on the tree but I think i’ll be moving him a little further up, out of harms way!
I’m so looking forward to the rest of December, making new traditions and sharing old ones with Luisa. She’s already requested that we bring her special Snowman toy to ballet tomorrow so I’m sure this is the start of a lifelong love of Raymond Briggs classic. Hurrah!
Have your family got any special traditions? If there’s an activity you always do in December or a book you love to read to get everyone in the Christmas spirit I’d love to hear about it.
